The new Suzuki Across has been unveiled; goodbye to the RAV4 and a new path for the Japanese SUV

Suzuki has taken a big step forward in its strategy with the 2026 Suzuki Across, introducing a new generation of the SUV. While the previous version of the Across was based on the Toyota RAV4 plug-in hybrid in many markets, the new version has finally emerged from under Toyota's shadow and is designed and developed on Suzuki's own Heartect platform.

End of technical cooperation with RAV4; Suzuki goes independent

The new-generation Cross no longer uses Toyota's architecture, and instead rides on Suzuki's own Heartect platform — the same one seen in cars like the Vitara and S-Cross. This means Suzuki is moving away from its technical dependency on the RAV4 and is looking to carve out a more independent identity in the SUV class, while also trying to make the new Cross a more global option that can compete in a variety of markets.

More compact and updated design

One of the most noticeable changes in the new generation of the Cross is the reduction in the dimensions of the car compared to the previous version. While the previous RAV4-based model was about 4635 mm long, the new generation Cross is more compact at 4360 mm long, which makes it more practical in cities and high-traffic environments.

Powertrain and hybrid version on the way

Currently, the version introduced in Seychelles is equipped with a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated gasoline engine with a power of about 102 horsepower, connected to a 5-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission. However, Suzuki has shown in official images that a hybrid version is also on the way; this version will combine the same gasoline engine with a 114 horsepower electric motor and will be equipped with Suzuki's AllGrip Select AWD system.

Suzuki's global market and presence strategy

Suzuki plans to export the new Acura (originally derived from the Victoris in India) to more than 100 countries. That means the new Acura could make its way to Europe, Latin America, and even the Middle East — where it could be seen as a more economical and compact competitor in the compact SUV segment. Some analysts also say Suzuki could even offer its new hybrid version in European markets at a more competitive price than the RAV4, making it an attractive option for buyers who want a combination of efficiency, fuel economy, and modern design.

Conclusion

The new generation Suzuki Across not only breaks away from the direct relationship with the Toyota RAV4, but also showcases Suzuki's independent identity. With a more compact design, a dedicated platform and global export plans, the new Across is ready to start a new competition in the compact SUV market - a competition that is no longer dependent on a partnership with Toyota.
